AMAHL & THE NIGHT VISITORS
GIAN CARLO MENOTTI
Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors is a charming retelling of the story of the Magi from the point of view of a young disabled boy, Amahl. Amahl lives in poverty with his widowed mother near Bethlehem. One night he sees a bright star in the sky and tells his mother to go look, but she wearily brushes him off. That same evening, three kings bearing gifts for a holy child visit Amahl’s meagre hut and seek shelter. Amahl has no treasure of his own to share, but offers his crutch to baby Jesus – and finds himself suddenly cured of his disability.
