La clemenza di Tito (The mercy of Titus)
An opera-seria by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Montréal, March 2019 – It is with great pleasure that la Compagnie Baroque Mont-Royal (CBMR) announces it’s production of a concert-opera: La clemenza di Tito by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in the Recital Hall at the Conservatoire, Saturday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m.
La clemenza di Tito is an opera seria commissioned for the coronation of Leopold II in 1791 in Prague. Mozart composed it in record time, at the end of his life, parallel to the Magic Flute. The final opera of the composer, we find the themes that are dear to him, including those of forgiveness and reconciliation. The magic of a music carried by admirable tunes of humanity, and the introduction of shocking ensembles, especially at the end of the first and second acts, contributed together to the fame and popularity of this opera.
Tito, the emperor of Rome, who is to marry Berenice, is targeted by a plot hatched by the ambitious Vitellia, who wishes to marry Tito herself. To achieve her ends, she uses the love that Sesto, a dear friend of Tito’s heart, gives her. Benevolent and imbued with justice, the emperor will eventually pardon all the conspirators.
The production will feature six singers, supported by the narrator Francis Gingras, whose interventions will replace the recitatives and allow everyone to follow this story of forgiveness and reconciliation.
