Young Cendrillon (Cinderella) goes from rags to riches, thanks to a loving prince charming, while she suffers scorn and humiliations from her cruel step-mother. The wealth of melodic invention of the score and the virtuosity it requires from the singers blend in a work that oscillates between wonderment and anxiety, laugh and tears, lightness and gravity. This other operatic masterpiece from the composer of Manon, Werther and Thaïs was a tremendous success from the day of its premiere.
