Who does not remember the famous “Va pensiero” air of the opera Nabucco ? No one can remain indifferent to this vibrant call for freedom, in tune with the geopolitical situation then prevailing in an Italy in search of independence. This famous choir has launched the career of young Verdi and immortalized in the history of opera this gigantic biblical fresco.

The action takes place in 586 BCE. Nabucco, king of Babylon, triumphed over the Hebrews. On the other hand, Zaccaria, the High Priest of the Hebrews, holds Fenena, Nabucco’s daughter, hostage, whom he threatens to kill. Ishmael, the nephew of the king of Jerusalem, has custody of it: now the two young people are madly in love. Abigaille, the presumed daughter of Nabucco and also in love with Ishmael, arrives and discovers their idyll. Learning shortly after she is in fact a slave, Abigaille wants to avenge both Nabucco and Fenena, his rival. Becoming Queen of Babylon thanks to ingenious subterfuges, she imprisons Nabucco, who attends helplessly to her triumph. But theatrical turn: the guards of Nabucco come to release him and at the moment when the Jewish people is about to be massacred, he orders his release. Abigaille dies poisoned, confessing his crimes.
