Event Details

Who does not recall the famous chorus “Va pensiero” from the opera Nabucco? No one can remain indifferent to this poignant call for freedom, in tune with the geopolitical situation then prevailing in an Italy on a quest for independence. This famous chorus launched Verdi’s career and immortalized in the history of opera this monumental biblical fresco.

The action takes place in 586 BCE. Nabucco, King of Babylon, has triumphed over the Hebrews. But Zaccaria, the Hebrew’s High Priest, hold Nabucco’s daughter Fenena hostage and threatens to kill her. Ishmael, the nephew of the King of Jerusalem, is to watch over her: however, the two young people are madly in love. Abigaille, the alleged daughter of Nabucco, arrives and reveals that she is also in love with Ishmael. She discovers their idyll and, learning shortly afterwards that she is in fact a slave, seeks to take revenge both from Nabucco and her rival Fenena. Crowned Queen of Babylon due to various ingenious subterfuges, Abigaille imprisons Nabucco, who witnesses helplessly her triumph. But in a dramatic turn of events, Nabucco’s gards come to release him and as the Jewish people is about to be massacred, he orders its release. Abigaille dies poisoned, having confessed her crimes.
