The Magic Flute/Die Zauberflöte Mozart
Opera Kiel
Canadian(s): Samuel Chan
Text from the Opera Kiel website:
Sarastro, priest of the gods Isis and Osiris, has kidnapped Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night. But help is approaching in the form of the young prince Tamino. He is supposed to free the beautiful Pamina from the clutches of Sarastro. For Tamino, it is love at first sight when he sees the effin of Pamina. The star-flaming queen promises her to his wife when he brings her back to her mother safely. With a magical flute and the lively bird catcher Papageno, Tamino sets off on a journey to Sarastro’s kingdom. Neither Tamino nor Papageno suspects what tests are waiting for them …
The “Magic Flute” is fairy tales and family tragedy, mystery play and folk theater. We believe we know this probably most famous of all operas and yet always discover new things in the infinite possibilities of interpretation. In search of love, wisdom and strength, we have been happy to be carried away by the catchy melodies full of depth for over 200 years.
General Director Daniel Karasek stages Mozart’s last opera for the first time across divisions with singers and actors in a new dialogue version written especially for Kiel by Roland Schimmelpfennig, the most played German contemporary dramatist. In his powerful text, the characters repeatedly step out of themselves and comment on their thoughts and actions. We are experiencing this duplication of the
Levels also in the representation: Each character is occupied with both a singer and an actor.
