Do you love opera? Do you care about the performing arts in Canada? Are you passionate about journalism? Do you want to ensure arts journalism has a dedicated space? Join the board of Opera Canada!

Opera Canada Publications is Canada’s longest continuously produced arts magazine. Founded in 1960 by Ruby Mercer, the magazine has been publishing four issues a year containing news about Canadians in opera, both in the country and around the world, for 64 years. In addition to the magazine, this not-for-profit organization has also recently invested in a robust and entertaining website (operacanada.ca) where you can get the latest news and reviews about opera in Canada. The organization has also been putting on the annual Rubies Awards for 23 years in November of each year, recognizing Canadians who have made significant contributions to the Canadian operatic scene including performers, educators, directors (and more!).

We are in an exciting transitional time as we expand our digital tools to implement new revenue generation content (including online classes for artists, arts administrators, and fans of the art form). Additionally, over the next 3 months we will be moving to a more digital-friendly magazine circulation software system that will house the tools/functionality that we can embed into our web pages to give our readers more subscription options. We are expanding on the digital side while keeping the print circulation going for our loyal subscription base.

Opera Canada is actively seeking new members for their Board of Directors.  Qualifications include an interest in opera, time to work on a committee (fundraising, editorial, digital, finance, the Rubies Awards) and a commitment to sustaining the art form. The Board meets approximately eight times a year via Zoom and our annual event, The Rubies, is held every November. If this sounds like you get in touch and learn more about this opportunity!

Please contact Board Chair Eva Innes at eva@evainnes.com and 416-565-1352.
