OperaWire has named Canadian tenor Matthew Cairns as one of their Top Ten Rising Stars for 2024, the only Canadian to make the list.
A former member of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio and a Grand Finals winner in the 2022 Laffont Competition at the Metropolitan Opera, Cairns returns to the Canadian Opera Company this season as Ismaele in Nabucco and Tambourmajor in Wozzeck. Also in 2024/25, Matthew makes his debut at the Opéra National de Paris as Froh in Das Rheingold and sings Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Orchestre Métropolitain, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, joining the Vancouver Symphony later in the season for the same piece.
Cairns says “It truly is an honour to be named one of OperaWire’s Top Ten Rising Stars of 2024 alongside so many talented artists. I feel very fortunate to be able to create and collaborate in this incredible art form. I hope to grow my capacity as an artist and share it with Canada and the world.”
Opera Canada joins opera lovers across the country in offering our congratulations to Cairns.
