Canadians at the Met: what’s on in January

by | Jan 18, 2021 | Featured, News

This month, get Canadian about your Nightly Met Opera Streams! We’re into weeks 45 and 46 – can you believe it? – respectively titled, “Leading Ladies: Opera’s Greatest Heroines” and “The Antiheroes”. Here at Opera Canada, we’re on the ready for Canadians at the Met this month. All performances begin at 7:30pm EST and are available until 6:30pm EST the following day:

January 20, Bellini’s Norma:

Sondra Radvanovsky, arguably one of Canada’s best imports, takes on her signature role, opposite Joyce DiDonato as Adalgisa, and Joseph Calleja as Pollione. Carlo Rizzi conducts this production by Sir David McVicar from October, 2017.

January 23, Massenet’s Manon:

Baritone Brett Polegato joins Lisette Oropesa and Michael Fabiano for this fabulously grand French opera, filmed October 2019. Maurizio Benini conducts.

January 27, Gounod’s Faust:

In one of his pre-becoming-the-Met’s-Music-Director gigs, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Gounod’s most devilish of opera’s, Faust. This 2011 production features Russell Braun as Valentin and Michèle Losier as Siebel, alongside Jonas Kaufmann as Faust, and René Pape as Méphistophélès. (Bonus: this production will also be available on CBC Music as part of the Metropolitan Opera’s Saturday Matinee Opera Broadcasts, January 30 at 1pm EST.)

January 31, Verdi’s Macbeth:

You’ll spot bass John Relyea as Banquo in Adrian Noble’s 2008 production of Macbeth, sharing the stage with Željko Lučić in the title role, and Maria Guleghina as Lady Macbeth.
