The Emerging Arts Critics programme (EAC) is an initiative aimed at supporting and fostering the next generation of arts critics and writers, helping them develop the tools needed to authoritatively write about and review ballet, music and opera performances.
This year’s program adds Opera Canada and the Canadian Opera Company to the already-existing collaboration between The National Ballet of Canada and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO). Eight applicants will be selected for the invaluable opportunity to receive one-on-one editorial mentorship from Opera Canada Editorial Director Gianmarco Segato, retired arts critic John Coulbourn and longtime music journalist and broadcaster, Robert Harris.
They will each attend and review one performance by each organization in the 2018/19 season and have their reviews published on The Dance Current, The WholeNote and Opera Canada’s websites. The Dance Current Editor Emma Doran, The WholeNote Publisher and Editor in Chief David Perlman and Digital and Social Media Editor Sara Constant and Mr. Segato will coach the writers in a one-on-one editorial process through to online publication.
The participants will also be invited to attend critical writing and journalistic research skills workshops hosted by the National Ballet, TSO and COC as part of the program.
Applications from aspiring arts reviewers between the ages of 19 to 29 are now being accepted. To apply, email media@national.ballet.ca a writing sample and why you would like to take part in the program. Deadline is September 14, 2018. The EAC programme is committed to inclusiveness and encourages applicants from all backgrounds and abilities to submit.
