Germany-based Chinese-Canadian baritone Samuel Chan explores the unique identity of being an Asian artist working in Western opera through a program of selections from Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. The effects of Orientalism in Western music, and how a Western education affects East Asian identity, are explored through a third-culture lens, a perspective unique to the second-generation Asian-Canadian/American experience.
