Manitoba Opera has announced that its fall production of Sweeney Todd, originally slated for November 2020, will be cancelled. The company is looking optimistically at its Tosca, set for April 2021, and there are programming plans in development to keep audiences engaged and ready to return to the theatre, if and when it’s safe to do so. The programming is promised to be a combination of online and live events, and details are forthcoming via the Manitoba Opera website.
Already planned is a concert event on November 7, 2020, featuring Winnipeg-based sopranos Tracy Dahl, Lara Ciekiewicz, and Monica Huisman, and members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The concert, dubbed The Sopranos of Winnipeg, will be streamed live at 7:30pm CT, via Manitoba Opera’s home venue, the Centennial Concert Hall. A promising detail: this will be a ticketed event, with livestream access available for purchase by household. Ticket and programming details are currently TBA.
