OPERA PLACES Tessa Fackelmann takes us to Sarasota

by | Mar 6, 2025 | Artist of the Week, Featured, News

Canadian mezzo-soprano Tessa Fackelmann takes us to Sarasota, where she is singing the role of Cherubino in Mozart‘s The Marriage of Figaro from March 8th to 28th (info and tickets here).

Tessa is a former studio artist at Wolf Trap Opera and will be joining the L’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal for the 2025/26 season. This season she can be found performing in her hometown of Ottawa with the Ottawa Choral Society and Operatic Revelry and singing back-to-back Cherubinos in Sarasota and Columbus.

While in Sarasota, Tessa chats with us about best rides at Disney, where to get the “sexiest” coffee and how to find alligators and alligator jerky. Read on to find out more.

City where you’re working?
I am currently working in Sarasota, Florida.

How long are you working on contract?
This contract that I am on is roughly 13 weeks long, starting on January 8th and ending on March 31st.

What’s the opera house like?
The Sarasota Opera House is one of the few opera houses left that focus on producing traditional, historically accurate productions of opera – both in their stagecraft and music making. Their repertoire spans from Mozart to Verdi! You can always expect to see large wigs, lots of petticoats and a good sword fight at the Sarasota Opera.

Where is the most peaceful place in the city?
The most peaceful place in this city would be Lido Beach. It is ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the United States. The sand is so soft and white, and I’ve found some of the most beautiful seashells along the shore. The best part? It’s only 10 minutes from the opera house!

Best coffee or tea?
There are two fantastic local coffee shops within walking distance from the Sarasota Opera – the first is Project Coffee. It’s an all vegan coffee shop, and it has the best lemon loaf I have tasted. The second is DD Roasters, which is the “sexiest” coffee shop you will ever visit. I’m a big fan of their extra dirty chai.

Coolest bar or restaurant you’ve been to?
The coolest bar I’ve visited is Art Ovation Rooftop Bar in downtown Sarasota. It’s a posh spot with a 360 view of the city, and if you look far enough you can see the ocean! The music is always spectacular with a wide dance floor that lights up. Definitely a great spot for a post-show nightcap!

An activity you have done that is unique to the area?
During one of our first weekends in Sarasota, a couple of my friends and I drove to Disney! It was such fun getting to experience Disney as an adult and to feel that magic. At the very end of our day in Epcot, we ventured on the Guardians of the Galaxy ride… It was UNREAL.

Is there something unexpected that happens locally that you discovered?
There is a large farmer’s market every Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm that is roughly one block from the opera house. I’ve been able to find a range of interesting things from delicious jams, alligator jerky, handmade linen clothing, fresh baked goods, a beer cart and so much more. The market spans several blocks and the vendors are so friendly! There is always something unique to find at the farmer’s market.

How did you find accommodation?
The Sarasota Opera was able to provide the accommodations for this contract.

What’s the most important thing you think of when it comes to finding accommodation as a singer?
I think some of the most important things to consider when finding accommodations as a singer is proximity to the opera house. I travel by foot so it is very important that I am able to walk comfortably to and from work. Another would be whether or not the space has a full-functioning kitchen. For a contract of this length, it is important to me that I have functioning kitchen space, or else… I’ll eat out every night.

Have you had a chance to explore some galleries or museums?
Sarasota has a rich history with the circus, specifically The Ringling Brothers. There is an incredible museum and art collection in what used to be their home. The Ringling Museum also has an exquisite botanical garden with exotic animals.

Is there anything else you’d recommend?
A (mindful) visit to the Everglades to look at the alligators!

Continuing the story of The Barber of Seville, Count Almaviva’s eye has now wandered and his current objective is Susanna, Figaro’s fiancée. The distressed couple, along with Rosina (now the Countess Almaviva) conspire to reveal the count’s lechery, despite the many obstacles thrown in their way. Mozart’s musical genius, along with Lorenzo DaPonte’s witty libretto make The Marriage of Figaro one of opera’s masterpieces.
