10 years after it was first commissioned by Heritage Opera in 2008, Mansfield Park finds itself at the University of British Columbia where the UBC Opera Ensemble is set to give virtual performances on Feb. 6 and 7, 2021.
David Agler conducts performances that will immerse audiences in a 19th-century Jane Austen atmosphere, but with a 21st-century aesthetic blending past and present.
Danielle Nicholson and Taryn Plater share the role of Fanny Price, Mansfield Park‘s young heroine who navigates a Cinderella-esque servant relationship with her wealthy relative Thomas Bertram (played by Rafael Laurindo and Liam Robertson). With Bertram owning the family estate, Fanny is sent on a journey to adulthood in a coming-of-age story adapted from Austen’s novel by British librettist Alasdair Middleton.
UBC Opera is adding a series of bonus interviews and presentations designed to complement the stage experience. The special guest line-up includes the original composer of Mansfield Park Jonathan Dove, UBC English Professors Dr. Miranda Burgess and Dr. Lise Gaston, UBC PhD candidate Alyssa Sy de Jesus, and Professor Emeritus Dr. Herbert Rosengarten.
The opera will be performed at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and streamed live online. As performance restrictions continue to be made in the COVID-19 pandemic, this is one of many upcoming opera events that UBC has in place for streaming in 2021.
