Tapestry Opera is bringing songs from the award-winning opera Rocking Horse Winner to Canadian Stage’s High Park Amphitheatre on July 17.
This special open-air concert will feature songs from classical opera, musical theatre and highlights from Rocking Horse Winner, which was previously cancelled due to COVID-19.
Telling the story of love, luck and greed through magical realism, the renowned opera was adapted to a one-act production by composer Gareth Williams and librettist Anna Chatterton from a short story by D.H. Lawrence. In 2017, the opera won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Production after its world premiere.
The performance will star soprano Lucia Cesaroni, tenor Asitha Tennekoon and the Canadian Opera Company (COC) Ensemble Studio Competition winner Midori Marsh. Joined by pianists Stéphane Mayer and Trevor Chartrand, the concert will also include pieces from Tapestry’s Summer Box Concerts which are available throughout the Canadian Stage’s Dream in High Park program.
The cast will be reunited here, having only performed together once before to record the Williams/Chatterton piece under strict COVID protocols in Spring 2020.
